The Port of Vancouver's decision to prioritize cargo container expansion over British Columbia's agricultural industry puts the viability of the region's food sector at risk.


Wade Sobkowich, executive director of the Western Grain Elevators Association, said rent on federal property at the Port of Vancouver went up 13 to 30 percent this year.

Members believe their rent increases are paying for container-related projects at the port. The port needs to generate revenue to pay its share, Sobkowich said, and that can come only through rent from existing users.


The City of Delta wants an assurance from the port that agricultural land won’t be taken for industrial purposes.

A civic report endorsed by council notes the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is currently updating its five-year land use plan and invited the city’s participation in the latest phase of the update, adding the new draft plan has a renewed focus on the protection and intensification of trade-enabling industrial lands.


Representatives of Canada’s agriculture sector are warning of higher prices and potential food shortages if production isn’t designated an essential service and allowed to proceed as usual during the COVID-19 crisis.
